  • The Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) Watts Bar 2, which began commercial operation in October 2016, is the nation's first new nuclear power reactor in the 21st century.
  • The TVA, which supplies most of Tennessee's electricity generation, operates 19 dams, 2 nuclear power plants, 7 natural gas-fired generating plants, and 6 coal-fired plants in the state.
  • With the nation's third-largest pumped storage hydroelectric generating facility and more than two dozen hydroelectric dams, Tennessee's 2016 net generation from hydroelectric power was the third-highest among states east of the Mississippi River, and eighth-highest nationwide.
  • The Southeast's first major wind farm, located  on Tennessee's Buffalo Mountain, began operating as a 2 megawatt facility in 2000 and has since been expanded to 29 megawatts.
  • Four utility-scale solar photovoltaic facilities around Selmer, Tennessee, have a combined capacity of 56 megawatts and are the largest solar facilities in the state.
