  • Montana holds the nation's largest recoverable coal reserves, and accounts for about 5% of U.S. coal production. 
  • Montana's four oil refineries, which can process 205,000 barrels of crude a day, receive most of their oil from Canada and Wyoming.
  • Montana is the fifth largest producer of hydroelectric power, and six of Montana's 10 largest generating plants produce hydropower.
  • About 6% of Montana's land area is held by Native Americans. The Crow Nation Reservation, which is the largest reservation in the state, holds an estimated 9 billion tons of low-sulfur coal.
  • Almost 8% of Montana's electricity is produced by utility-scale wind turbines with 700 megawatts of generating capacity.
